Agroecology

Agroecology is grounded in food sovereignty, feminism, Indigenous knowledges, and biodiversity, and demands to end imperialism, capitalism, patriarchy, neoliberal market-based economies, free trade, false solutions, and corporate control of globalized food systems.

Millions of people around the world have pinned their hopes and their dreams on the establishment of food sovereignty based on agroecological systems that honors their contribution to society and affords them respectful livelihoods and the ability to live in harmony with Mother Nature.

Observing Nature with Awe and Wonderment during this Historic Frigid Weather

At a minus 15 degrees on the night of February 13 - 14, the night was alive! (The first photo reads 36 degrees from the warmth of my hands and the sunshine.) With awe and wonderment, I share several of the photos from that night.

The trail cam captured rabbits, rats, and pheasants near the kitchen compost pile in the evening, overnight and the following morning. Predators showed up as well: the Great Horned Owl has what looks like a pheasant at 12:45am and in the next few frames it seems to fly off at 12:48am with a rabbit! A coyote shows up at 2:00am and again at 3:14am. The Great Horned Owl is back for a rat (its eyes reflected in the camera flash) at 6:23am.

It’s much more than changing a few practices, which are the small steps that agribusiness instructs conventional farmers to do when it becomes evident that their industrial farming methods are polluting the water and eroding the land.

Publications

“Agroecology is a tool for organizing in opposition to corporate power. Agroecology cannot be defined exclusively in terms of sustainable and healthy food production. When we work together as farmers, farm workers, peasants, and food sovereignty activists, we do it to develop a strong platform to create policy, to influence public opinion, to educate each other, to mobilize against corporations that are putting our lives and livelihoods at risk.”
